Here’s some visuals M.Burn and I put together for a song I’ve recently written. I hope it shares the feeling of intimacy that I feel the song communicates. It’s what I would consider a venting song about certain societal pressures I feel as a woman/young person. I certainly don’t look down upon anyone that does choose to go along with the norm. I don’t think it hurts to examine the choices we make on a daily basis, though.

We recently went up to Canada to visit our friends and stay in their remote rustic cottage on a lake. Except for a rather harrowing experience when the dog found half of a ‘special’ cookie that rendered her completely legless and tripping for a good 24 hrs, much fun and relaxation was partaken of. Mark Audet as usual had things set up nicely for impromptu jams, with me experiencing a throwback to the ol’ church days when I was resident omnichordist. I wrote a song inspired by the wonderfully dinky island omnichord beat and memories of a long ago ill fated relationship.

We got home to a week of early spring’s rainy days during which time I neither left the house/studio, nor got dressed or washed my hair. It felt great, until I saw the video montage Malcolm put together of me recording the new song. In the end I overcame my vanity of not wanting to be seen in my slatternly state because I thought the video he put together of bits and bobs from Japan and other places was beautifully done. And I thought its always good to spread a bit of omnichord love, and share with others who have never had the pleasure of seeing/playing one.

Footage is recorded on the Leica DLX5 which was a Christmas present from me to Malcolm (aren’t I nice?), and a little Japanese made pin-hole number called a Haranezumi which produces all sorts of random and exciting effects.

I’ve had quite a creatively transformational time over the last couple of months. I actually feel stupidly excited about it. It’s to do with a sonic landscape I’ve fantacized about creating as the perfect backdrop and counterpoint to the sometimes saccharine and mostly hummable melodies I sing. It started quite some time ago, driving in the car and hearing an early Brian Eno record for the first time. I immediately fell in love with the keyboard oriented sound. Don’t get me wrong, I like guitars, but mostly a lightly strummed accoustic, hopefully nylon string even. But I’ve gotta be honest and say I’ve never been that crazy about them being a feature in my music. Big electric ones, that is. But sometimes it works great, so I don’t want to be too cut and dry here. What I really mean is, keyboard music rocks my boat. Go Kraftwerk.

Anyway, Malcolm had been mixing this cool artist Richard Buckner, and I had heard the roughs in the car with him and immediately loved it. He uses nice vintage keyboard sounds and has beautiful melodic music and a gorgeous voice. His first mixes for him contained the usual sparkly tricks of a bit of reverb here, a few effects there, but it wasn’t totally what Richard was after. Suddenly he had a lightbulb moment that Richards roughs had no effects whatsoever, because Richard had a fairly primitive home recording set up and only knew how to record things dry, but with the great sounds, he didn’t need them. So Malcolm mixed the rest of his songs without effects, and just made the sounds more spacious and perfectly balanced. It was cool. After his lightbulb moment of recording with minimal to no effects, Malcolm had reconnected with his original way of recording when he had hardly any gear, by limiting all the toys, and just sticking to a very basic palette. I’d been begging him to just let me record my stuff simply with cool keyboard sounds without sticking other stuff on it. It clicked! I started to play my songs in live takes on a vintage Korg with a minimalist sound which is also as rich and huge as you’d expect of an analog instrument, and he and I would put a spattering of a few little bits of pieces on it, and that’d be it. Bit of piano here and there, sparse accoustic guitars, another layer of keyboard, and a few bv’s. Done. Check out the results of a couple of weekends doing this on Malcolm’s downtime. I’ll load a couple up in the player. I can feel a new album coming on.

“Sandrine opened the night and their simple arrangements and fun pop played well to the audience eager to see Citizen Cope. The chemistry shared between the duo was fun to see unfold on stage. As tempos changed or the focus of the song shifted, their eyes were on each other. It was interesting to watch the interplay.

There were several great tracks from the set including “Where Do We Go“. It was easy to get into and the songs developed nicely. Sandrine had a nice range and had plenty of variety to make the set succeed. She showcased her personality extremely well, gaining the attention of the audience.” READ THE FULL REVIEW HERE.

Some of my favorite times touring the Dark Fades album were spent in France where ‘Where Do we Go’ became a hit after being chosen as the theme song for a big advertising campaign for FNAC, which is a big chain music/electronics retailer. From there it was picked up by radio, making it possible for me to play some great music tv shows. Taratata was a great time. I almost passed out in horror the day before, as I’d told the producers I would perform (along with Where do We Go) a duet with a fantastic Swedish artist, Peter Von Poehl, and had selected The Carpenters ‘Close to You’, as it sounded simple – and because I love it of course. If you’re wondering where the horror came in, it was when I thought I should try to learn the song at least – the performance being the next day, and realized for the first time that Burt Bacharach songs only SOUND simple. ’Close to You’ starts out pretty easily, in the key of C I think, then modulates up to Dflat. Thats where it gets tricky. Trying to memorize all his effortless sounding chord changes and melodious hooks the day before made me giddy. I met Peter backstage, where we had a run-through. I was still pretty shaky. Suddenly we were on Live tv on Frances most popular music show during prime time. Live audience, the whole bit. Anyway, we pulled it off kind of, but you can see my little fingers shaking quite violently on a close-up shot, and it gets a bit pitchy towards the end. I was in such shock trying to pull it off, I have no memory of playing the song at all. Just sheer panic. That was about the most nervous I’ve been. Now I always make sure to prepare within an adequate amount of time, say 2-3 days…

Anyway, after all that blithering, you’re probably expecting to see that video here, but I’m too computerly inept to link to it (these are still early days for me with my own website that I can actually *update myself* but I’ve linked to where my videos are, so browse those to find it.

Here’s something I could find. It’s from an interview I did for Paris’ newspaper, Le Parisien which can be found with the videos along with a solo performance of ‘Where do we Go’. Here’s a couple of songs they filmed at a little solo showcase –>Le Parisien \’Julietta\’ and Le Parisien \’Save your Kisses\’

You can find the other videos here!
